Strategic Planning

Successful organizations are plan-driven and have a long-term focus. Their activities are guided by strategic management. It is not sufficient, however, to only produce a written plan document; a robust planning culture must exist. Board and staff discussion need to refer to the plan, and decisions must trace their roots back to the plan.

Strategic planning always makes good management sense. It should be part of the ongoing governance and management of the association. Effective strategic management requires board and staff involvement.

Bostrom recommends the first strategic planning session to be a consulting project at which point the plan strategies can be implemented by the management team. Refer to BCA  for additional information on strategic planning.
