Head and shoulders shot of Ken Monroe

Hello! I’m
Ken Monroe, MBA

I am the Executive Chairman at Bostrom

Strategic Direction | Growth Strategies | Operational Excellence I Organizational Culture

I have more than 45 years of experience in association management and health care policy and advocacy. I joined Bostrom in 1999, bringing with me 27 years of experience with the American Medical Association, including numerous executive level positions and 10 years as Chief Operating Officer (COO).

At Bostrom, I have had the opportunity to lead our executive team through major transformation over the years through technology advancement, market disruption, and a complete overhaul of our team structure and culture to ensure a “best workplace” for our employees. We launched our Consulting division my first year at Bostrom and have been doing incredible work for large associations since that time.

I also advise on a variety of subjects including relationship and coalition building; policy development and advocacy; strategic direction; governance and structure; staff selection, motivation, team building, and executive coaching; and with both staff and elected leaders, building growth oriented, fiscally sound organizations.

My Background

Prior to joining the Bostrom team, as COO of the AMA, I was responsible for a staff of 1200 and a budget of $240 million. Prior to becoming COO, I served in several senior level positions in healthcare policy and advocacy, membership, marketing, and business and professional services in our for-profit subsidiaries. In every position, my responsibilities included advocating AMA to its many stakeholders.

My experience includes relationship building and consensus development within organizations, coalition partners and constituent organizations; adding value for an organization’s members; developing vision and strategic growth plans and turning them into actions and results; repositioning an organization with a sound market-based strategic plan; creating a strategic marketing organization; providing members with new products and services and the organization with significant non-dues revenue growth; directing policy development, government, legislative and political affairs; directing professional relations and field staff, as well as membership development and services; and managing numerous other association programs and functions. In these efforts, I helped increase the fiscal strength of the association; restructured numerous programs and activities for greater effectiveness; intensified outreach to targeted segments of the membership population; and built effective, results-oriented management teams. As an example, I restructured multiple advocacy activities including government affairs, political action, policy, field service, communications, and litigation efforts, all to achieve effective, integrated advocacy results.

In addition, I have served in a number of volunteer positions on boards and advisory bodies. I am a past President of the American Society of Medical Society Executives (AAMSE), having served on its Board for nine years. I am still active with the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) and have served on numerous committees and on the Board for five years, with two years on the Executive Committee. I am still active with and have served on the U.S. Chamber’s Committee of 100 for over 25 years. I have been a member of the Professional Convention Management Association (PCMA) for over 20 years. I also have served on boards and committees of charitable, fundraising, and health care organizations.

I earned my M.B.A. from Loyola University, Chicago, concentrating in economics and marketing and received a B.S. in business administration from the Ohio State University, with a concentration in biostatistics.
